I’m Back. Trustee Chris H-J gets lost on the trail

The trails are calling – what’s your why?

In the game of life there are demands everywhere, Work, family friendships to name a few.

What’s your tonic? As a trustee of the Trail Pot it’s been a journey to get to where we are. The time and energy it takes to start a charity, get all the sign-offs, build websites and write policies.. it’s been a journey.

In fact I hadn’t been out on my bike for months until yesterday.

You don’t realise just how good our sport is for your wellbeing until you’re there. Amongst the trees, the smell of leaf litter surrounding you and a thin ribbon of trail ahead of you going to? Wherever you want.

In my day job I work in children’s services, making decisions, “managing” and working with trauma, it’s a lot. But here on this damp late autumn morning I’m having one of those aha moments… why haven’t I been back here for so long?

It’s easy to put off self-care, disguising it as something else, something more important. Bit by bit it becomes tougher to restart… until you do.

Fundamentally I joined the trustees on the Trail Pot because of my faith in my friend Chris, he’s so passionate about resourcing our community it’s infectious. Having coached MTB for over ten years as an ambassador for Knolly bikes and having a passion for mental health I’m all to aware of the variety of people in our sport. Without a diversity of trails and places to ride we become bland, a monochrome lacklustre affair. I’m determined to keep our community resourced, in an organised, equitable way.

I bring my pedal up to the top, the pawls in the hub giving the familiar clicks.. a deep breath, nothing else matters apart from this time of focus. The fresh air is cold against the back of my throat. I’m back.. and I’m not sure where I’m headed.

And that’s the why.
